Courses offered through community colleges or universities or other in-class learning institutions may range anywhere from U.S.$1,000.00 to over U.S.$3,000.00. This is the most expensive method of learning to be a medical transcriptionist. Correspondence or at-home medical transcription courses are usually less expensive than in-class courses. However, even in the category of correspondence courses there are some that are rather expensive. Medword recommends Meditech's "Personal Edge" training programs because they are well written, come with lots of extra materials, have easy payment plans, and the programs are priced, we feel, very reasonably. You are urged to check out all different kinds of programs before you purchase any of them. Be wary of any institutions promising MT Jumpstart or if they do promise job placement, try to confirm how they place you in a job, how many new MTs they have placed and where they have been placed.

As a medical transcriptionist you will be transcribing medical dictation that involves, usually, the most recent drug names, the latest medical phrases, medical words, equipment, and instruments. Medicine is an ever-evolving science that requires you to stay abreast of all these new things that are being dictated. You therefore will need to stay informed by updating your medical drug and word references and by reading information on new drugs, medical procedures and diseases. Keeping your knowledge up-to-date will ensure that you are able to provide your client(s) with the best transcription possible. Only you know what is best for you in your own situation. Performing medical transcription at home in your own home-based business is not a "get rich quick" undertaking. If you are an enlightened person, you know there is really no way to get rich without a lot of hard work. Medical transcription is hard work but can be very rewarding both financially and personally. Make no mistake however, if you think that having your own business is a way to sit back and let the money roll in, you could not be farther from the truth. If you are not willing to make personal sacrifices and work smart and/or hard, you are not the kind of person to have your own business.
